Developing teams

Developing a team is a process and it doesn't happen overnight. In your role as a manager, you are responsible for team development and managing your employees. In line organizations, this is traditionally done in the departments. In matrix organizations, however, it is done in cross-departmental teams and in project organizations in/for the individual projects. 

 

Building a team is first of all the same in every form of organization. It should be sustainable if the team you form is to work together for longer. 

That is why we speak of phases of team development, because development is to be understood as a process. Not only the current team but also future teams should benefit from your reflection on what you have experienced.

As a leader , you must be able to persuade. Persuasiveness can be learned. Do you know your values, your strengths and weaknesses and your ability to achieve success together with others? These insights as well as your communication skills are the foundation. In addition to knowing your personal orientation , you must find a place as a person in the prevailing corporate culture .

High-performing and self-confident teams:
Such teams should be challenged and encouraged by you. Set incentives and give challenging tasks. Praise the team when they achieve agreed goals and thus strengthen the team's cohesion.

Underperforming teams:
Motivate the team and overcome weaknesses in the team together. Make informed, fact-based judgments and avoid viewing the team as weak at all costs. Find the potentials by arousing curiosity, breaking up old team behaviours and increasing the self-esteem of the team members.

Very heterogeneous teams:
Very inappropriate behaviour can occur in these groups. The team may be at odds and the language within therefore very foul. Trust among each other does not exist. Have patience and be lenient. Put the brakes on misguided processes with understanding but without compromise. Help to overcome difficulties and increase the performance of each team member. Motivate and listen actively!

Silent teams:
Be an impulse generator and encourager and convey more self-confidence and courage. Avoid making too hard decisions or reprimands at first. Consider the team as a unit and start with team talks. This will help you to motivate and open up the team members.

Students, graduates and young professionals
You have successfully completed your studies and may have gained professional experience through internships. Nevertheless, you have not yet been able to find a permanent job.
